Handling risks hide in plain sight at school.

A school is a surprisingly physical place to work. Furniture gets shifted for every group activity, halls are set up and stripped back for assemblies, deliveries of books and supplies land all year, and many staff lend pupils a steadying hand.

This Manual Handling Course gives teachers, SNAs, caretakers, and office staff the safe-handling basics that fit those everyday jobs, so the risks people barely notice stop turning into time off.

A school's duty of care runs both ways. The same legislation that protects pupils protects the staff who keep the place running.

Your duties as a school employer

A school is a workplace like any other under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007. The employer - the board of management, ETB, or patron - has to manage manual handling risk for staff, not just safeguard pupils. In practice that means:

  1. Assess the tasks - the furniture moves, deliveries, and pupil support staff actually do.
  2. Train affected staff - proper manual handling training for anyone who lifts or supports as part of the job.
  3. Supply the aids - trolleys for stock, and hoists or slide sheets where pupils need them.
  4. Set safe systems - agreed ways to handle jobs like rearranging a classroom or setting up the hall.
  5. Keep records - training logs that stand up if they are ever checked.

SNAs carry the heaviest handling load

Of all school staff, Special Needs Assistants face the most demanding handling, supporting pupils with physical disabilities through tasks such as:

  • Transferring a child between a wheelchair and seating
  • Assisting with toileting and personal care
  • Supporting safe movement around the school
  • Using specialised handling equipment

People handling is a different skill to lifting a box. It is built around the individual child, which is why it needs training tailored to them - not a one-size-fits-all approach.

This course gives SNAs a strong foundation, but where a pupil has significant physical needs the school should arrange further people-handling training specific to that child on top of it.

FAQs

School Manual Handling questions.

The things principals, boards, and school staff ask most before booking the course.

Do teachers really need this training?
Yes. Teachers move furniture, carry books and supplies, set up halls, and often help pupils who need physical support. Any staff member whose work could cause a handling injury should be trained, and that covers most of the staff room.
Can staff fit it around the school timetable?
Yes. The course is online and self-paced, so staff can complete it during non-teaching time, on a Croke Park hour, or over the holidays. It takes about 45 minutes and saves your progress as you go.
Do SNAs need anything beyond this course?
This course gives SNAs a solid grounding in safe handling, but those who support pupils with significant physical needs usually need additional people-handling training tailored to the individual child. The school should assess each situation and arrange that on top.
Can the school cover the cost for staff?
Yes, and as the employer the school is generally expected to. Boards of management, ETBs, and patrons should fund required safety training, and our team pricing makes it straightforward to enrol a whole staff together.
