That habit is three years. It strikes a sensible balance - long enough to be practical, short enough that your knowledge stays fresh.
Three years is the norm, but plenty of higher-risk employers ask for a refresher every year. Always check what yours expects.
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 says employers must provide "appropriate" training, without naming a validity period. When to retrain is left to the employer's risk assessment - but the three-year standard is firmly established.

- Company policy says so - some employers retrain yearly no matter what
- The guidance shifts - manual handling rules change in a meaningful way

Warehousing and logistics
Large distribution centres tend to add annual top-ups or toolbox talks, while full certificate renewal usually still follows the three-year cycle.
What happens if it expires
An expired certificate does not automatically stop you working, but it does cause headaches:
- Your employer may struggle to show training was kept up
- Insurance cover could be affected if there is an injury claim
- An HSA inspector may treat it as a compliance gap
- You might have to retrain before doing certain tasks again

Is there a fixed legal expiry date?
Irish law does not set a legal expiry date. What it does is point to HSA guidance and common practice, which suggest a refresher every three years. Most employers work to that, and plenty ask for more often in higher-risk work.
How do I renew my certificate?

Can I keep working once it has expired?
